Good morning.

Thank you all for coming, and welcome to our Music Event today.

You know, Apple is leading the digital music revolution. But to us, at it’s core, it’s all about the music, and before we start, I just wanted to recognize a good friend of mine, and an incredible musician who’s in the audience with us here today, 16 time Grammy award winner, and the most talented cellist in the know universe, the incomparable Yo-yo-ma, sitting right there.

OK, he’s embarrassed, and mad at me, probably.

h3. _0:01:33_ Update on iTunes

Let’s start today. I’d love to give you an update on iTunes. As you may know, we have sold over half a billion songs on iTunes, to date, and we are selling songs at the rate of 1.8 million songs each and every day. Ain’t that incredible? And because of that, iTunes has an 82% market share here in the US. And it’s doing extremely well around the world, 80% market share in the UK, as an example.

And iTunes is a global phenomenon. There are iTunes Music Stores now in 20 countries around the world, which represent 85% of the global music market.

h4. _0:02:30_ Podcasting

Now, the last big thing we introduced in iTunes was podcasting, and so let me give an update on podcasts. This is the home-page for podcasts, and I’m really excited to tell you that there have been over 7 million subscriptions to podcasts to date, and we just launched it like, you know, two months ago. Seven million subscriptions to podcasts. There are 15.000 podcasts in the iTunes directory, and that’s growing by a thousand a week, so this phenomenon is just exploding, and they are in 21 different languages, including Estonian, Finnish, Serbian & Thai.

These are some of the podcasts that have been added recently, and let me take a look at some: CBS, CNN, Wall Street Journal, Major League Baseball, The White House, House Democrats, Senate Republicans… I don’t know what’s wrong with House Republicans and Senate Democrats, but, anyway, half of them got it together and got their podcasts. It’s pretty amazing.

And these are the top 9 podcasts, just wanted to show you. Itreally great mix of obviously the mainstream as well of the most eclectic, so it’s a great balance of both. So podcasting is taking off like a rocket, and that’s pretty exciting.

h4. _0:03:49_ iTunes Music Store metrics

I’ve got two other really exciting things to share about iTunes today. The first one, is that we have now 2 million songs in the iTunes Library. We started with 200.000 songs two and half years ago, and we have now two million songs, which is the largest online music library in the world. So two million songs in iTunes.

This next statistic we never shared with anyone before, how many accounts do we have on iTunes. How many accounts? We have just crossed 10 million accounts on iTunes. And they come with credit cards! Now, if you take 10 million accounts, and you divide that into the number of songs we’ve sold, it means that the average account has purchased around 60 songs, so this are not folks that are getting on iTunes, buying two songs, and never coming back. An average of 60 songs. And most of these accounts have been added during the last year, so you get a feel for the quantity of the purchasing, it’s significant. And with ten million accounts, that makes iTunes on of the largest Internet stores around. As a matter of fact, the statistics are not that easy to get, but as far as we can tell, iTunes may be the second largest Internet store, behind only Amazon. So we’re very, very excited about that. And that’s a little bit of an update on iTunes.

h5. Harry Potter

Now, iTunes of course it’s only as great as it’s content. We’ve got the best content on the Internet, two million songs, lot’s of exclusive content. Today we’re announcing some new exclusive content on iTunes, two really exciting things. The first one… Harry Potter.

We are really fortunate that JK Rawlings has agreed to put all six Harry Potter audio books on iTunes, exclusively on iTunes. These books are fantastic, let me give you an example.

So, Harry Potter. You can buy any of the six books, or we’ve done what we’ve done with some artists like U2 last year, we created a digital box set, of all of their songs you can buy just with one click. Well, we’ve done that with Harry Potter too. You can order all six books with just one clic. It’s called the complete Harry Potter. And if you want to, you can even buy them with a collectible iPod, the new Harry Potter collectible iPod, which has the Hogwarts crest laser engraved on the back.

So, with one clic, you can buy every Harry Potter book, and put it in your iPod, and you can even put it on a collectible Harry Potter iPod if you so choose. You can go to the store starting today, and a whole section devoted to Harry Potter. So we are really honored and really excited about this.

The second piece of exclusive content we’ve got today is also very exciting. And it’s Madonna. Madonna has so far resisted putting all her songs online. You could buy a few albums elsewhere, but never buy a song. And today Madonna is announcing that she’s putting all her albums, all 15 of her albums, on iTunes, by album and by song, and we’re really, really excited about this.

So there is, of course, a whole Madonna page, and all of the albums, and I thing this is going to be really worth the wait. So what do we do about this? I want to thank her, so let’s see if we call her.

M: Yes. you’re very welcome. I tried to hold out for as long as possible, but I got tired not being able to download my own music.

SJ: That’s good. Hey, you’ve got a new album coming out soon. You wanna talk us about it?

M: Yes, it’s called Revenge of the broken arm… No, it’s called Confessions on the Dance Floor, and I just got the dancing part, because I’d decided to have a record full of dance music.

SJ: Great, we can’t wait. Ah, do you have an iPod?

M: Of course I do!

SJ: Which one?

M: That’s all I know! Oh, which one don’t I have?

SJ: Really?

M: Every time I get a new one, a new one comes out the next week. You’ve got stop being so prolific!

SJ: Yeah, well, we, we may disappoint you today again, too. Hey, thank you very much, and we’re going to sell a lot of your songs for you.

h4. _0:09:55_ iTunes 5

We’ve got one other thing that’s new with iTunes today. Today we’re introducing the next version of iTunes, called iTunes 5. And what I’d love to do is take you through just some of the major features on iTunes 5, and you’ll be able to download it later on today.

So the first one is, a little bit of a refined look. You know, every once and them we get time and get through we get better ideas, on how to put it together a little bit more, and this is what iTunes looks like today, and we just tidied up a little bit, little bit of refined look as you can see, old and new.

I think the most important thing we’ve done in some ways, is we put the time on either side of the time bar, so you can now have both the artist and the song name in the LCD display, it’s rather nice.

On Windows, is actually even more visible, because we have a little bar at the top of the current one, and you can see that it cleans it up quite a bit.

All right. Second thing, big feature that people have requested, the ability to organize playlists in folders. We have now that in iTunes, so as you can see, you can have a weekend party folder with lots of playlists in it. Keeps the source list clean, and allows you keep things in a nice way.

Next one, maybe the most useful new feature for any of us, it’s the search bar. It’s a way to find what you looking for even faster. So as an example, when you’re looking in your own music library, and you search for something, we’ve added the search bar right here. That let’s you say I just want to look at music, just want to look at audiobooks, just look at podcasts, I downloaded a video as part of an album, and I want to find it, or a booklet, very easy to find things this way. And we’ve taken that search bar, and we’ve also added it to the iTunes Music Store, so you want to look for something like Summer, as an example, you can get the search bar right here, and you can look at everything —we’re giving you a little more information now on the Music Store, Artist and Albums and Audiobooks in this case—, but if you just pick Music, you’ll just see Artists and Albums, if you pick Audiobooks you’ll see all the audiobooks that relate to Summer, if you pick Podcasts you’ll see all podcasts that relate to summer. So, it’s really really nice to use. Again, it let’s you find what you’re looking for a little faster.

We’ve added Microsoft Outlook syncing. Now, the iPod has always had the ability to put contacts and calendars on it. And Mac users have enjoyed the ability to auto-sync those, so every time they plugged their iPod, they auto-synced their contacts and calendars. Windows users had had to do it manually. Well, with iTunes 5, they can now auto-sync their contacts and calendars right out of Outlook and Outlook Express, and there’s a preference on the Windows version that let’s you turn that on, and it’s very, very simple. So we think a lot of Windows users will enjoy that.

Next the smart shuffle. You know, we got a lot of people that say our shuffle is not random. Well, it really is random, but sometimes random means you get two songs from the same artist next to each other. It just happens randomly sometimes. So what we’ve added is smart shuffle to actually make it less random, if you want. Even though people will think is more random. It’s actually less random. In preferences, right there, smart shuffle allows you to control how likely you are to hear multiple songs by the sames artist, of from the same album, in a row. Right? So, you can leave it on random, or you can say I want it to be more likely to hear this songs from the same artist in a row or less likely. You can tweak it however you want, and have it come out just like you like. So that’s smart shuffle.

Next is album reviews. We have a great team that is now writing some awesome album reviews. And so we have over thousands by the minute, we’ll be adding more every single week, we got new iTunes reviews, and I think you’ll like them. They’re very, very good, over thousand of them, as I said, in there today.

And another thing that has been requested: parental controls. We’ve got a new parental tab in preferences, and it allows you to say “look, disable podcasts”, or disable the music store, or the ability to share music. Maybe most importantly, on the Music Store, don’t let my kids preview or buy explicit music. And what’s the most important feature here, parents can lock it with a password, so kids can change it. So we’ve built that in, and we think that’s going to be a pretty popular feature too.

So, these are just a few of the features on iTunes 5, we’re constantly carrying it forward, and let just go ahead and show you a few of those things now.

All right. Let’s get iTunes up here. Everybody loves to way. This is the iTunes we know and love. And again, I can see the song and the artist at once. And as you can see, I can open a folder and see lots of playlists here, which is really nice. Now, let me go ahead and search for something, I’m in my library, and I’m going to search for Harry, and obviously, I get a bunch of Harry Potter stuff, but you see the search bar up here, so I can just say Music, and I get some songs about Harry, that don’t have anything to do with Harry Potter; in audio books, though, every thing has to do with Harry Potter, if I want to find those really fast. You know there are even podcasts about Harry Potter? And here are some of them. You know, it’s amazing. And don’t have any videos about that, but I do have a booklet, you know, when you buy the Complete Harry Potter, it comes with a PDF booklet, like a lot of our albums do, so you find that really rapidly, so that’s kind of nice. So this is an example of that.

Now what I’m going to do is going to the Music Store, and show you the search bar. Here’s the Music Store, and let’s go search for Dylan, one of my favorite artists. And here’s Dylan, shows me a lists of artists, Bob Dylan and all of the Dylan artists, albums, even audiobooks about Dylan, and again I can just look for Music, I can look for just Audiobooks, I can look for podcasts. Right?

When I go back to Music, I can also look for things by artist, and it shows me all the artists on the left, and their albums on the right, even a few more than one if they have them. It’s very nice. Or I can search by album, and I just see all the albums. It’s really, really a great way to find something.

We have also, as you can see, enhanced the store in other way. We have a double decker swosh here, for new releases, because this is the most popular part of the store. What we’ve also done is we personalize them. So, what we’re actually personalizing, right here, you have all the different genres you go to. Well, in my case, maybe I go a lot to Rock, or Alternative, so I can go and see new releases for those genres without having to go to those genre pages. So right up here you can see all the new releases.

And lastly, I wanted to go the Madonna content here. Here’s Madonna right here, and I can go to her first album, and here’s her stuff.

So that’s a quick demo of some of the new features in iTunes 5. These are some of them: along with slightly refined look, even nicer. iTunes 5 is available today, it’s a free download at apple.com, should be on the servers probably about now, so right after the presentation you can go to download it, and I think you’re going to like it a lot.
